چکیده

1 This paper provides a first order asymptotic theory for generalized method of moments (GMM) estimators when the number of moment conditions is allowed to increase with the sample size and the moment conditions may be weak. Examples in which these asymptotics are relevant include instrumental variable (IV) estimation with many (possibly weak or uninformed) instruments and some panel data models that cover moderate time spans and have correspondingly large numbers of instruments. Under certain regularity conditions, the GMM estimators are shown to converge in probability but not necessarily to the true parameter, and conditions for consistent GMM estimation are given. A general framework for the GMM limit distribution theory is developed based on epiconvergence methods. Some illustrations are provided, including consistent GMM estimation of a panel model with time varying individual effects , consistent limited information maximum likelihood estimation as a continuously updated GMM estimator, and consistent IV structural estimation using large numbers of weak or irrelevant instruments. Some simulations are reported.

Adaptive Elastic Net GMM Estima- tion with Many Invalid Moment Conditions: Simultaneous Model and Moment Selection CENTER FOR POLICY RESEARCH –Spring 2015

This paper develops the adaptive elastic net GMM estimator in large dimensional models with many possibly invalid moment conditions, where both the number of structural parameters and the number of moment conditions may increase with the sample size. The basic idea is to conduct the standard GMM estimation combined with two penalty terms: the quadratic regularization and the adaptively weighted...

Empirical Likelihood Estimation of Continuous-Time Models With Conditional Moment Restrictions

The EL estimators have some favorable higher order asymptotic properties. We extend the EL method proposed by Donald et al. (2003) to estimate non-i:i:d: continuous-time models with the known functional form of the conditional characteristic function. In many cases even the MLE method can not be performed, the EL method can do. More over, not only does the EL method resolve the problem of covar...

Adaptive Elastic Net GMM Estimator with Many Invalid Moment Conditions: A Simultaneous Model and Moment Selection

This paper develops an adaptive elastic-net GMM estimator with many possibly invalid moment conditions. We allow for the number of structural parameters (p0) as well as the number of moment conditions increasing with the sample size (n). The new estimator conducts simultaneous model and moment selection. We estimate the structural parameters along with parameters associated with the invalid mom...

Efficient Estimation of Dynamic Panel Data Models: Alternative Assumptions and Simplified Estimation

This paper considers the estimation of dynamic models for panel data. It shows how to count and express the moment conditions implied by a variety of covariance restrictions. These conditions can be imposed in a GMM framework. Many of the moment conditions are nonlinear in the parameters. We derive a simple linearized estimator that is asymptotically as efficient as the nonlinear GMM estimator,...

GMM with many weak moment conditions

Using many moment conditions can improve efficiency but makes the usual GMM inferences inaccurate. Two step GMM is biased. Generalized empirical likelihood (GEL) has smaller bias but the usual standard errors are too small in instrumental variable settings. In this paper we give a new variance estimator for GEL that addresses this problem. It is consistent under the usual asymptotics and under ...
